Weight Loss System - European Pole Walking

By Donovan Baldwin I’m not one to latch onto fads. I tend to favor tried and true methods, such as walking, but I am always interested in new exercise techniques that might enhance the results. I am even more interested in new approaches that may help those with physical problems enter mainstream physical fitness more easily. So, when my wife showed me an article in a magazine about what they called, “pole walking”, I did a little digging. Here’s what I found out. This is what is often called “Nordic walking”. It is, put as simply as possible, the technique of walking with what resembles a pair of ski poles. As with skiing, the walker alternately moves the poles as he or she walks. Obviously, there is a “best” technique, but it’s a little complicated to describe here. However, the basic method is first to grip each pole firmly but not tensely. Then, keeping the arms straight, swing your arms to approximately waist height and holding the poles diagonally behind you, help propel yourself forward alternating your right and left poles as you walk. What has developed as an activity in its own right, Nordic walking was originally a means by which Finnish skiers could maintain fitness and ability during the off-season. Just as they skied on snow, they would walk on land, helping to propel themselves with poles. Obviously, these used in the sport are NOT ski poles. They are specially made and can cost anywhere from about $40 to over $200 per pair. You can determine optimum pole length by multiplying your height in inches by .72. The poles are adjustable. So, what are the results of proper pole walking? Well, among many research groups and facilities, the Cooper Institute in Dallas, tested the pole walking technique. Here are a few things they and others found out about pole walking. 1. Using the poles encourages the use of more muscles in the walking process, thus allowing you to burn fat more effectively. 2. The poles help take pressure off of joints, feet, back, etc. Once accustomed to the process, people report feeling better walking with them than without them. 3. Studies have shown that people walking with poles tend to lose more weight more rapidly than those simply walking. In fact, some studies indicate that pole walking may burn as much as 50% more calories than simply walking for exercise or weight loss. Nordic walking has been popular in Europe for some time, and there actually is an organization dedicated to the activity - the International Nordic Walking Association. By Daniel N. Brown Have you experienced any disappointments lately? What a dumb question, right? Life is full of disappointments. Disappointment is nothing more than dashed expectations. When people put too much expectation on things or other people, disappointment is inevitable. People and things will always disappoint us. It’s good to remember that its not so much what happens to us, but how we handle it. When our expectations become let down, it will be at that moment when we must decide how to react. When things dont prosper or succeed according to our plan, the first thing we feel is disappointment, and this is normal. There is nothing wrong with feeling disappointed. But, we must know what to do with that feeling or it will move into something more serious. The devil would like for nothing more than for us to lie in the pit of disappointment for as long as possible. This way he can cause the seed of discouragement to grow. From there, he will plant seeds of depression, and so on. Here are the progressive evil Ds in order: 1. Disappointment 2. Discouragement 3. Depression 4. Despondency 5. Despair Disappointment, if left undelt with, will inevitably lead to discouragement, then to depression, then to despondency, and then on to despair. Its in despair where people have lost all hope and could eventually commit suicide. If you are still feeling disappointed from past dashed expectations, let me remind you, God is in complete control and He knows right where you are. If we are born again, children of the Most High God, then He takes care of us. Jesus said, Take no thought for your life (Matthew 6:25) and Be anxious for nothing (Philippians 4:6). God doesnt want us to worry. He wants us to trust Him because He has a perfect plan for our lives (Jeremiah 29:11). Yes, we are to plan our way but the outcome is totally in Gods hands (Proverbs 16:9). Remember, disappointment is nothing more than dashed expectations. Dont put too much expectation on anything or anyone. People and things are fallible. Only God is infallible. By Stephanie McIntyre If you are a gardener, you know what a challenge it can be to keep unwanted bugs from making a meal of your prize plants. It’s a never-ending battle, whether your approach is organic or chemical. And while they’re usually less insect problems to deal with on indoor plants, they can still develop infestations on occasion. Even healthy-appearing houseplants can come home with some insects on them that you might have missed during the in-store inspection. It helps if you can quarantine them for a week to ten days at home, but a few hearty individuals can still sneak through your. The best way to prevent harmful bugs from harming your plants is to catch them early in the game, before any real damage is done. If you can do this, then you can identify the culprit and deal with it promptly and accordingly. But often the first indication of an infestation is after the plant has been affected. If your plant shows signs of stress like color change, leaf drop, or wilting - you may have insects. There are of course other reasons for these problems, such as over-watering, under-watering, temperature, lighting, etc. So if you see any of these symptoms, a careful inspection is in order to see if you can find bugs. If do find insects, then the next step is to ID them. There are many resources, many on the Web, to help you to do this. Here are some of the bugs that you may come across on your plants. Whiteflies: These are among the most difficult of all houseplant pests to control. They are hard to see when young and once they mature, can rapidly infest a whole houseful of plants. Whiteflies look like tiny white moths. They are related however, to scale insects. Like scale, they feed by sucking plant juices. With a heavy infestation, the plants yellow and eventually die. They also excrete honeydew, which can lead to another problem, sooty mold fungus. This too can lead to leaf drop. When choosing a product for whiteflies, you have to select one for the specific stage of development they’re in. Insecticidal soaps and oil sprays get rid of nymphs while yellow sticky traps can help control adults. Scale: Scale look like tiny bumps along a plant’s stems. Unless you are looking for them or some kind of insect, it’s pretty easy to miss them. They’re often mistaken as part of the plant. They come in a variety of colors including, tan, black, brown and gray. The scale part of the insect that you see is actually a hard protective covering. The two stages of scale are the adult (hard shell) stage and the crawler stage. The crawlers are the easiest to kill with insecticides, while adults may be very difficult to control. They damage a plant in much the same way as whiteflies, and also leave a sticky excretion that can result in sooty mold. Spider Mites: these tiny red bugs are not really insects as they have 8 legs and no wings. They are related to arachnids (spiders). With this pest, you’ll most often see damage before you see the bug, unless you happen to be looking for them. These guys also leave webbing, which they use with air currents to spread to other plants. Both the nymph and adult stage of spider mites damage plants. The damage is usually seen as speckled coloring, color loss and droopiness. They are difficult to control. Often several integrated steps are needed (including destroying those plants that are heavily infested) for success. Aphids: These are small (1/16 - 1/8 inches), six legged bugs that pierce plants and suck their juices. They come in a variety of colors including light green, red and black. Aphids can multiply into great numbers quickly, and spread from plant to plant. Damage from aphids includes leaf curling, stunted growth, and distorted leaves. They also produce honeydew, which causes sooty mold. Use insecticidal soap, or if possible, take plants outside and spray with a fairly strong jet of water to remove them. When Studies Mislead: The Skinny on Low Fat Diets

By Richard Helfant When I read the front page headline in the February 7 edition of the New York Times, LOW-FAT DIET DOES NOT CUT HEALTH RISKS, my 35 years as a cardiologist-researcher told me something was probably amiss. The article that followed seemed to faithfully report the conclusions of an 8 year, $4.15 million study of nearly 49,000 postmenopausal women from the Womens Health Initiative (WHI) Trial. But after carefully reviewing the original reports in the Journal of the American Medical Association, I discovered the problem. Fundamental flaws in the research invalidated the dangerously misleading headline. The government sponsored study followed women, ages 50 to 79, to determine whether a group assigned to a low-fat diet lowered their risk of breast and colon cancer, heart attacks and strokes when compared to those allowed to eat whatever they pleased. The researchers found no difference for any of the diseases between the two groups. Authorities hailed the report. Newspaper quotes read: revolutionary, the Rolls-Royce of studies, overturning three decades of wisdom, largely closes the book on a highly publicized chapter of dietary history. Does it? If the women who ate whatever they pleased did as well as those struggling to cut fat intake, doesnt that mean that we are finally and forever free to pursue a diet of bacon cheeseburgers, and chocolate cheesecake? Unfortunately, the answer is no. The reason? The problems with the WHI study make it impossible to draw valid conclusions. The women assigned to the low-fat group were instructed to reduce their total fat to 20% of total energy intake. They fell far short of that goal, decreasing the fat to 29%. Additionally, the comparison group (after receiving a copy of the Dietary Guidelines for America, and other health-related materials) also decreased their dietary fat to approximately 35%. Given the minor dietary differences between the two groups, the resulting minor differences in their bad (LDL) cholesterol levels was predictable. In the low-fat group, average LDL-cholesterol fell from 133 to 123 mg/Dl, while the eat anything group also fell, from 134 to 127! Both levels are well within the recently revised Federal guidelines that recommend LDL-cholesterol be kept below 130 in individuals without additional cardiovascular risk factors. In addition to the low bad cholesterol levels, both groups had high amounts of good (HDL) cholesterol, ranging from 58 to 60 mg/Dl. Normal good cholesterol levels are 30 to 60, and those in the higher ranges are at a significantly lower risk for cardiovascular disease. Thus, both groups had highly desirable cholesterol profiles. It should come as no surprise that the eat anything group had a 30% lower incidence of developing cardiovascular diseases than the researcher-statisticians originally anticipated. The higher prediction of disease occurrence was the main reason why the study was designed to be only eight years in duration. How does this study apply to men? According to the Los Angeles Times, it probably applied to men as well because the disease mechanisms are the same. Even if the study was valid, that conclusion would not be, because the assumption about similar disease mechanisms omits a crucial fact. Since men typically have much lower good (HDL) cholesterol levels than women, decreasing their bad (LDL) cholesterol is considerably more important. Confused? Dont be. A solid body of evidence supports the notion that lifestyle changes do decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. Last year, the American Journal of Epidemiology published a large reportwith a 20 year follow-up–from the Nurses Health Study of dietary fat intake and risk of coronary heart disease. It showed clearly favorable results. In January of this year, a report in The Lancet analyzed the effect of fruit and vegetable consumption in eight studies that included a total of 257,551 men and women with a 13 year average follow-up period. The investigators concluded: Our results provide strong support for the recommendations to consume more than five servings of fruit and vegetables per day, which is likely to cause a major reduction in strokes. Since the WHI study was undertaken, a revolution has taken place in our understanding of specific types of dietary fat. Intakes of specific fats are related far more strongly to heart disease risk than total fat. Collectively, these analyses demonstrate that a diet lower in saturated fat (fatty meats and butter) and trans fat (processed foods, and stick margarines), and higher in monounsaturated (olive, canola and peanut oils) and polyunsaturated fat (safflower, sesame and corn oils), as well as amounts of fruit and vegetables not approached in the WHI Trial, help prevent heart disease. In fact, a trend was observed toward reduction of cardiovascular disease risk in the quartile of women who ate the lowest amounts of saturated and trans fat, and highest monounsaturated and polyunsaturated varieties. If the study had been carried out longer, this observation might well have become statistically significant. The WHI investigators noted this, stating that Trends toward greater reductions in CHD (Coronary Heart Disease) risk was observed in those with lower intakes of saturated fat or trans fat or higher intakes of vegetables/fruits. They concluded by suggesting that more focused diet and lifestyle interventions may be needed to improve risk factors and reduce CVD (cardiovascular) risks. So, what to do? My advice may surprise you. The primary goal of healthy eating is to reach and maintain a normal body weight in order to lower the risks of diabetes, high blood pressure or the metabolic syndrome (the combination of diabetes, hypertension and a particularly malignant form of high LDL-cholesterol). This is best achieved, not by going on a diet, but by learning to develop sensible eating habits. Heart-healthy eating is easier and more satisfying than one might think. There is no need to deprive yourself of an occasional steak or delectable dessert, while nibbling miserably on raw carrots for the rest of your days. Healthy eating is a long-term commitment. It is about choosing nutritious foods that are satisfying by making sensible substitutes, modifying favorite recipes, adopting an experimental attitude, and discovering over time what works best for you. To round out a heart-healthy lifestyle, become physically active. Exercise is the great health facilitator because it increases HDL (good) cholesterol, lowers blood pressure, helps prevent diabetes, and improves heart function. In addition, physical activity is a natural antidepressant, and a great way to rediscover the wonders of your body. Research has shown that you can reap major health benefits with a minimum amount of effort and time. Begin by taking brisk walks for 30 minutes or more, several times a week. Decrease sodium intake if you have a tendency towards high blood pressure, and of course, avoid tobacco exposure. Despite the findings from the WHI Trial, it is vital for women, and men, to understand that simple lifestyle changes do provide invaluable health benefits. They also provide a wonderful bonus.
