Antiques - An Introduction

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Michael Russell In the mid-18th Century, Roman antiquities became popular by way of home decoration. Pots, bronzes and statuary recovered from archaeological sites were all sought after items. In order for the gentry to accommodate these (it was only the gentry who could afford to), their houses and or gardens needed to undergo a complete remodelling. As a result, their old furniture and decorative items were stored in outhouses, attics and relegated to use by the servants. It is these items, which are now so eagerly sought after. In the early part of the 19th Century, people didn’t collect things just because they were old. They may have collections of books, manuscripts, coins or maybe maps but furniture was for storage, sitting on or sleeping on and paintings were usually family portraits. Other items such as porcelain and glass were also purely functional. However, later that same century, with Queen Victoria’s reign in full swing, her subjects began to take an interest in the origins of their possessions and that was the beginning of what we now know as the antiques industry. The definition of “antique” originated in the 1930s when American customs officers needed a yardstick by which to judge whether duty was chargeable on works of art. As mass production of articles had begun some one hundred years earlier, an antique was deemed to be something more than one hundred years old. Today, however, the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow defines an antique as “an older object valued because of its aesthetic or historical significance”, in other words a collectible. Obviously, there are those who deal in antiques for a living but even they may live a whole life in the field and never come across that elusive piece bought for a song and sold for a fortune. There are those, of course, who have what they call in the trade an “eye”; they have a natural ability to spot the “real thing” in the midst of a roomful of rubbish, but they are few and far between. For an amateur, the likelihood of striking it rich is even lower, so the best course of action is to collect what one likes. If one likes a piece, is happy to look at it on a daily basis and has paid a sum for it which one can afford, then it doesn’t really matter whether it will bring an undreamed of sale price. In most cases, an aged decorative item will increase in value. However, keen amateurs can disturb the market, as they did in the late 1980s, when Clarice Cliff pottery and lesser-known Impressionist paintings were in vogue. The market became flooded with the genuine and not-so-genuine and eventually, the bubble burst. It recovered in time of course, but too many people seeking items with not enough knowledge can cause a hiatus in the natural flow of buying and selling. If he concentrates on one type of item; paintings, ceramics, furniture, etc., then an amateur has a greater chance of building up the knowledge needed not to be fleeced by unscrupulous dealers. Experience and knowledge can be gained by studying books and the objects themselves or better still hanging around with an expert. Even then, the diversity of styles and periods will take a great deal of learning and of necessity, information will overlap. For example, in order to fully understand English Georgian furniture and recognise it, one may need to study Louis XIV and XV furniture as well, for the purposes of comparison. There’s nothing like experience, so the more time spent rummaging in antique shops and talking with the owners, the better. Common Sense

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By David Carter Ill come straight to the point. I dont own the copyright to this article, and that confession is bound to wake up the moderator big time! But then again, no one does, because this piece is in the public domain, and it is anonymous, and the writer is asking that it be repeated as often as possible, hence the reason that I am rewriting it here. Bear with me please. Today we mourn the passing of a beloved friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was as his birth records were lost long ago in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as, knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn’t always fair, and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple sound financial policies such as, don’t spend more than you earn, and reliable parenting. Adults, not children are in charge. His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do, in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Panadol, sun lotion, or a sticky plaster to a student; but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant. Common Sense lost the will to live, as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses, and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home, and the burglar can sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, sued, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents Truth and Trust; his wife Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility, and his son, Reason. He is survived by three stepbrothers, I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I’m A Victim. Not many attended the funeral of Common Sense because so few realized he had gone. Like so many things, you never miss them, till they are no longer there. If you still remember Common Sense, please pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing. What more can I add today in 2006? Not much really, for there is a great deal of Common Sense written into the above piece, and of course it is well worth repeating. Have a great day. Abandoning Credibility in Our Justice Department

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Lance Winslow America is losing patience with our Justice Department for many reasons. There was the past FBI Scandals, 911 debacle and spy information cases, but consider if you will all the other issues? The FBI computer system, which was suppose to work but didnt costs taxpayers billions only to be abandoned and starting over. Then there was the Martha Stewart trial when the FBI lied on the stand to convict her not of insider trading but lying, thus showing the complete hypocrisy of the system. Then we had the FTC a little tiny worthless little agency as part of the Justice Department go after SPAM, which as soon as they did increased by 3000%. Now we are told that Identity Theft thru phishing is an issue but that has not stopped. The government announces an 18 month investigation and arrests 190 people around the world for Identity Theft and claims it is fiercely protecting us as Identity Theft has increased 10-fold during that same time. The FBI in a sting arrests Border Patrol, DEA, National Guardsmen on our borders allowing shipments of people and drugs thru and lets them go with 18-month sentences? Now the Justice Department is wanting to tell us they are protecting us as we learn that Al Queda has nuclear devices already in our countries borders? Is it just me or have you also lost complete and utter respect for the Justice Department? How can we get the credibility back to our government and set our Justice Department on track to protect the American People? Consider this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. Digital Scrap Booking: The Frugal Scrappers Dream

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Vera Raposo As a frugal mother, Sharon had to admit that she never got into scrap booking over the years because one visit to a scrap book supply shop sent her into sticker shock. With three kids and a limited budget, she knew she couldnt afford all of the supplies and tools that she would want to use. So her childrens photos remained in shoeboxes. In 2005 she discovered a digital scrapbooking kit, the practice of creating scrap book layouts on a computer using digital images. Sharon pulled out her shoeboxes and spent weeks at the computer scanning in every memory. The kids started to think Mom was going a bit mad though when she started to scan everything else she could get her hands on. She scanned all kinds of fabric, curtains, blankets and scarves. She scanned greeting cards, calendars, wall paper and macaroni and cheese boxes. If it fit onto her scanner, she added it to her digital scrapbooking kit. Then, with a simple image program, she went to work. Without scissors or glue or double sided tape, she created page after digital page. With every new layout she thought up she felt like she was getting away with something sneaky. Surely she should have to pay someone something for all of the fun that she was having? Digital scrap booking has matured to the point where you dont have to find out own digital crafting elements, you can find some online for free and other image sets you can pay for. As to be expected, digital image sets are far less costly when compared to purchasing paper and fabric and accessories. It really is an attractive alternative to someone scrap booking on a budget. Sharon keeps her digital projects strictly on her computer, using the layouts as a screen saver slide show. Many others choose to share their creations online or even to print out their layouts and bind them together in a book. If you would like to try your hand at digital scrapping youll want to check and see what kind of image manipulation software you have on your computer. If you dont find something appropriate you can download a copy of the free public license graphic software named Gimp. Learning to work with digital scrapbooking kits will take some practice, but youll have fun in the process and soon be creating fun layouts for your memories. Vera Raposo has been scrapbooking since her oldest child was 5. Where To Find Ethnic Food Recipes

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Andrew Krause Most home cooks at some time or another find themselves getting interested in ethnic cuisine. The impetus might come from their heritage maybe grandma was a German immigrant or grandpa came from Vietnam. Or it could just be simple cook’s curiosity. All of us get tired of cooking the same old recipes over and over, and decide to move beyond, frequently into ethnic food recipes. However, and this is especially important if you don’t already know anything about the particular cuisine you’re after, it can be hard to figure out if the recipes you’re cooking are authentic, or are even worth trying. You might pick an Asian recipe that sends you out hunting exotic ingredients for three days only to find that either the recipe was written poorly or the flavor is something you just can’t stomach. Unless you want to sink a lot of money into cookbooks, your best source of recipe information is going to be the Internet. However, searching for Internet recipes can be fraught with peril. How do you know this recipe will work? Do you have any clue what it tastes like? Do you maybe have a picture of what the finished dish should look like? This is where sites that allow user reviews of recipes are invaluable. We foodies are a verbose bunch, forever ready to share good recipes and tips and warn others away from the bad ones. On sites such as Allrecipes or Cooks.com, you’ll find ethnic food recipes with hundreds of reviews from users. Often, these reviews will include possible ingredient substitutions, problems inherent in the preparation and possible solutions and all sorts of other great information. It’s very similar to having a kitchen full of cooks ready to teach and advise you at all times. While you might not want to trust just one or two reviews, you can feel fairly safe when you see certain ethnic food recipes have been cooked successfully by dozens of people. Pick the recipe, read the comments and forge ahead! Online Dating - How To Avoid Faked Photos

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Ian Mansfield One of the great things about online dating is the ability to read the profiles of hundreds of people in the peace and quiet of your own home. You can scan for key interests and age groups in perfect anonymity without expressing your preferences in public. However, you are often relying on the honesty of the other person to make your search a worthwhile one. Obviously, when out in pubs and bars, this is still an issue, and lets be honest, who hasnt embellished their jobs and social life story at least a tiny bit to impress that prospective date. So, online dating can solve that problem but it does sometimes bring up another issue the less than honest profile photos. Unlike in a real world bar or pub, you are relying on the honesty of the photo that the other person has uploaded to their web site. A lot of people will try to take the most flattering photo possible and who can blame them for that! However, there are those who will pull out a computer graphics program and deliberately lie about their appearance by making subtle modifications to their appearance. Even worse, are those people who steal other peoples photos and use them not only is this fraud, we would be rightly concerned about meeting people who would consider doing that. So, how do we avoid these pitfalls with online dating. One great way that is now starting to take off is webcam chatting via dating web sites. It is practically impossible to modify your appearance via an online live webcam chat service and it really does offer a fantastic way of meeting people for a few minutes in the safety of your own home before you decide to meet up in the scary “real world”. By using dating web sites to manage your webcam chat you also gain the added level of privacy in that that website should hide your IP address and physical location something which would not be possible if you chatted directly with the person. This can be important if you are just dipping your toe in the world of online dating and want to protect your privacy while still letting people see who you are and what interests you have. In summary, webcams offer an exciting and safe new way of online dating that offers security and honesty in both parties. Short on Space in the Garden - Think About Gardening in Containers

Monday, January 21st, 2008

By Allison Thompson What better way of creating a natural sanctuary in a limited space whether in a busy city street, on a balcony of a flat or on a roof terrace then use containers. You can also use containers to help accentuate the look of a deck or patio in your garden by using colourful pots full of annual plants. You can even great a warm and inviting look to the front of your house by filling window boxes with shrub roses or any other small perennials that you feel will suit. Whether you make an arrangement of a group of pots to mass effect or whether you use a single one to highlight a smaller space, you will be delighted with the results that you create. With container gardening you are able to vary the colour scheme and as each plant finishes flowering you can replace it with another variety. But whether you choose to harmonize or contrast the colours that you use, you should ensure that you include a plant in each container that varies in height. You also need to consider the shape and texture of the leaves of the plants as well. For example a tall strap liked leaved plant will provide good vertical background to any low growing wide leaved plants that you use. Also choose flowers that will last longer or if not then ensure that you have other plants ready to replace when they have finished blooming. Next it is a good idea to experiment with the containers. You may find that an old porcelain bowl or copper urn that you have lying around will make the perfect container or you may decide to go something that is really modern and is made from timber or tiles. But should you decide to by a container already made then you could do no worse than purchase a terracotta pot, not only do they look wonderful, but they tend to absorb water as well. So if you want to make sure that your plants do not dry out, then I suggest you paint terracotta pots with a special sealer which you will find available at most hardware and DIY stores. Then if you really have a tight budget, consider buying cheaper plastic ones. You can paint them on the outside with a water based paint to good effect and it also means that you will be able to tie them into the scheme that you have designed. However, when purchasing plastic pots do not forget to also purchase the matching saucers that go with them which catch any excess water. This will prevent your cement floors from being stained and also stop timber floor from rotting. Whenever planting pots in containers always ensure that use a high quality potting mix as this will ensure that you get the best performance possible from your plants. Just think how attractive your front door steps will look to any visitors if you place an attractive plant pot on each one or just at the top by the front door. You also find that indoors plants or flowers in pots help to create a warm and cosy atmosphere which any guest to your house will find welcoming. It is best if you decide ahead of time exactly where each pot is to be positioned in the space you have available and then purchase the plants afterwards. Certainly there is no point in buying plants which love the sun for a shady area or vice versa. You will also need to consider that those plants which require a lot of space because they have a large root area should only be used in an open garden, as a container will restrict the root growth and eventually the plant will die. However, if you find that you have ample space by your front door it might be wise to invest in a number of potted plants that are off to one and will be look more appealing than if you decide to just pot plants in similar pots on either side of the door. You want the space to look spectacular not boring. It is an idea to group pots of plants together in odd numbers rather than even and make sure that you vary the types and heights of them also. If you want to tie the group together to give some uniformity in your garden then by placing large rocks that are similar in appearance and only slightly different in size you will be able to achieve this. So you may find that by placing 3 to 5 pots of the same style and colour together but in different sizes will also look very effective. So all you need is a little creativity and a small amount of determination and soon you will have a container garden that will not only be the envy of your family and friends or any strangers that see it as well.
